If you are planning a trip, be sure to include a visit to the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website as part of your planning. You will find a wealth of information there on items such as required travel documentation, consular services, country insights, travel updates and warnings and passports. There is also a traveler’s check list at www.voyage.gc.ca, a handy resource and must-read for the seasoned or first-time traveler. Here are some of the tips you will find:
- Consult the Travel Country report to find out the latest information on security and safety issues on your country of destination.
- Carry a passport that is valid well beyond the date of your expected return.
- Leave copies of your passport’s identification page, itinerary and insurance policy with friends or family.
- Obtain any required visas well in advance.
- Arrange for health and travel insurance.
- Plan your Itinerary and budget.
- Reconfirm your flight and hotel reservation before travelling.
- Anticipate financial needs: local currency, traveler’s cheques, departure tax.
- Take care of health needs: vaccinations, prescriptions, medical certificates, supplies, extra eyeglasses.
- Check whether dual citizenship is an issue for you.
- If travelling with children, carry documentation proving your right to accompany them (consent letter, court order).Register on-line with a Canadian government office abroad.
- 13.Obtain an International Driving Permit, if required.
- While abroad, keep receipts for purchases and make special arrangements for food, plants, and animals brought back to Canada.
- Consult the Travel Industry Council of Ontario at www.tico.ca for information on Ontario’s travel consumer protection laws.
