NEWMARKET, ONTARIO — Homeless and individuals at risk of homelessness in the region of York will get the help they require to build a stronger future for themselves, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. Ms. Lois Brown, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation and Member of Parliament for Newmarket–Aurora, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
“Our government is giving a hand-up to Canadians with housing needs, and is helping those seeking to break free from the cycle of homelessness and poverty,” said Ms. Brown. “We are pleased to support the Regional Municipality of York in its efforts to find local solutions to local problems. By working together, we will be able to respond to the needs of our most vulnerable citizens in York, as well as help them move towards greater self-sufficiency.”
“York Regional Council is committed to working with other levels of government and community partners to identify and provide appropriate supports to our most vulnerable residents,” said Mr. Bill Fisch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Regional Municipality of York. “The financial support announced today will play an important role in building on our ongoing efforts in poverty reduction and the promotion of healthy communities.”
The Regional Municipality of York will receive Homelessness Partnering Strategy funding of over $1.5 million, which it will distribute over the next three years to local organizations so that they can provide housing facilities and support services for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the communities most in need.
