Statement in the House of Commons by MP Lois Brown
Mr. Speaker,
I rise in the House today in celebration of International Development Week 2012.
This Minister of International Co-operation launched this year’s celebration under the theme "I Am Making a Difference".
During IDW 2012, Canadians will have the opportunity to learn more about Canada’s role in international development and the important contributions that Canadians are making in developing countries.
IDW 2012 will focus on the empowerment of women and girls.
As our government has demonstrated through its commitment to Maternal and Newborn Child Health, we believe that the empowerment of women in developing nations is critical in the reduction of poverty.
This week, Canadians will be able to take part in events across the country such as the World University Services Canada Symposium, and the SickKids International Global Child Health Day.
Mr. Speaker, Canadians are known for lending a hand to those in need. We look forward to sharing their stories.
