Government of Canada Launches Fire Prevention Week October 3-9, 2010
October 03, 2010

(Newmarket-Aurora, ON, October 3, 2010)
- This year, Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3 to 9, 2010. The theme, “Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with!” gives Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the importance of fire prevention and the many things that can be done to stop fire from destroying lives and property.

“Accidents happen, but in the case of fire, those accidents can be prevented by implementing sound prevention strategies,” said MP Brown. “Please test your smoke alarms every six months and make your home and workplace fire safe.”

The Government of Canada promotes and encourages compliance with national and international fire protection standards within the federal government and First Nations communities. All levels of government and all Canadians share responsibility for protecting people from the consequences of fire.

"Our gratitude and profound respect go out to our Firefighters who, without hesitation, put their lives on the line to protect ours,” said MP Brown.  “Their courage and professionalism demonstrates the very best of human character – and we recognize their role in keeping all of us safe."

Fire Prevention Week was first observed in Canada in 1919. The week is observed across North America and commemorates the Great Fire of Chicago, which killed 300 people and destroyed thousands of buildings on October 9, 1871. This tragedy, together with the blaze on Parliament Hill in February 1916, helped to increase awareness of fire prevention in Canada.

Each year, the Governor General of Canada signs the Fire Prevention Week Proclamation, reminding Canadians of the need to remain alert and responsive to the dangers of fire.
