CANADA—ONTARIO PARTNERSHIP CREATES JOBS, STIMULATES ECONOMY IN NEWMARKET-AURORA
June 05, 2009

Residents of Newmarket and Aurora will benefit from federal and provincial infrastructure funding for five local projects that will upgrade or rehabilitate local community infrastructure, announced Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown and Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Dr. Helena Jaczek. These projects are examples of both governments’ commitment to stimulating the Ontario economy through the creation of jobs in our communities while enhancing local services.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Government is getting shovels in the ground and flowing money faster to stimulate the economy and create jobs for Ontarians,” said MP Brown. “Thanks to the strong relationship between our two governments, we can work together to help Ontario communities and the economy thrive immediately and in the future.”

“Under the leadership of Premier Dalton McGuinty, Ontario is leading the way,” said MPP Dr. Jaczek. “We are creating jobs and the decisions announced today will soon lead to improved transportation and enhanced facilities and services in our community. Our governments are working together to modernize infrastructure - creating a competitive advantage that attracts business and strengthens our economy today and into the future.”

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to $2,792,466 in the five projects. The municipalities will contribute the balance, for combined total eligible project costs of up to $8,377,400.

A further 17 projects involving the Regional Municipality of York, including a major renovation to the EMS Central Support Facility and Health Connection/Contact Centre, were also included in the announcement.

These projects are some of hundreds across the province that will break ground thanks to this joint federal and provincial funding initiative. The governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects starting in the 2009 construction season.

BACKGROUNDER

Infrastructure Stimulus Fund at Work in Ontario

On June 5, 2009, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced a joint investment of $5,584,932 million for 5 community infrastructure projects identified as priorities for Newmarket and Aurora that will create jobs and help build a stronger community.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government has established a new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund that provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure rehabilitation projects. Funding to Ontario communities, which will be matched by the government of Ontario as part of its 2009 provincial budget, Confronting the Challenge: Building our economic Future, is available for two years for projects that will be built during the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

The following projects are included within the $500 million national “top up” for the Communities Component announced for projects that can be built over the next two years.  The governments of Canada and Ontario are contributing two-thirds of the total eligible costs of these projects, while Ontario communities are contributing the remainder of the funds.
