MP ADDRESSES AURORA CLIMATE CHANGE FORUM
February 23, 2009

(Newmarket-Aurora, Ontario, February 23, 2009) - Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown spoke at the Aurora Environmental Advisory Committee’s “Weathering the Future” forum on climate change February 22 at the Aurora Senior’s Centre. Panelists included representatives from Environment Canada and the Windfall Ecology Centre along with Ms. Brown who presented recent federal government environmental initiatives.

“I commend the Aurora Environmental Advisory Committee for its ongoing work in advising residents and elected officials on ways we can better protect and enhance our environment," said Brown. "This forum proved to be a valuable initiative, bringing community leaders together to share important information on climate change.”

Ms. Brown reviewed the Conservative government’s many accomplishments over the last two years, noting that Canada’s Economic Action Plan announced January 27 provides even further protection for the environment by investing in Green technology and clean energy.

“Our Environmental Action Plan shows a continued commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the energy efficiency of our homes,” said Ms. Brown. “In these economic times, it’s especially important that we take steps to help Canadians control their energy costs while generating new jobs.”

Brown also announced that a senior-level U.S. - Canada Clean Energy Dialogue has been established following the recent meeting between Prime Minister Harper and President Obama. The two countries will immediately cooperate on several critical energy science and technology issues. The Clean Energy Dialogue will involve discussions on expanding clean energy research and development, developing and deploying clean energy technology and building a more efficient electricity grid based on clean and renewable generation.

“Whether it be a new carbon capture system, an energy saving renofit to your home, or a decision to avoid products with excessive packaging, all actions, large and small, contribute to a lessening of our carbon footprint, an improved environment and ultimately a more sustainable and prosperous future,” said Brown.
