Concerned with the future of the riding's automotive manufacturing sector, Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown has met with auto dealerships from across the riding. The response from area dealers to her invitation to participate in an emergency round table discussion was overwhelmingly positive, says Ms. Brown.
"On both the manufacturing and retail side, our important automotive industry is struggling with the effects of the economic downturn. Being on the front lines, I felt that dealerships are in a tremendous position to offer valuable advice to our federal government."
Brown will be forwarding three key suggestions both to the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Industry, garnered from the meeting:
- A temporary tax holiday in conjunction with the province to help stimulate consumers' purchasing decisions
- A federal commitment to assist Canada’s large automotive manufacturers with an extension of an immediate aid package, to help reduce the uncertainty that presently exists and promote consumer confidence
- Encourage the banks to extend credit for consumer loans
Lois Brown is the elected MP for Newmarket-Aurora. She is a member of the Standing Committees for Infrastructure and Foreign Affairs.
