Public has their say at MP Brown’s Pre-Budget Consultation
January 18, 2010
![]() Residents in Newmarket and Aurora had plenty of suggestions for the upcoming federal budget at a recent Pre-Budget Consultation hosted by Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown. The meeting was held January 18th at the Aurora Town Hall. A number of excellent presentations covering a range of issues were tabled says MP Brown. "Given the fragile state of the economic recovery, the upcoming budget could be one of our most important," added Brown. "Town hall meetings such as this allows the public to directly inform government about their priorities and issues, a crucial component of the process. All of tonight's suggestions will be passed onto Finance Minister Flaherty for serious consideration." Several took the opportunity to participate. Presentations were heard from the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, Multi-Employer Benefit Plan Council of Canada, Newmarket Soccer Club, Aurora Seniors Centre, Yellow Brick House and Aurora Chamber of Commerce as well as from several individuals. Specific suggestions included enacting a temporary tax rebate on new car purchases, extending the Housing Renovation Tax Credit, investing in Canada's knowledge industry, taxing exported raw materials, expanding the student loan and grant program, allowing a GST flow-through in multi-employer pension plan programs, granting Tax Free Zones, improving sport facilities and promoting Canada's scientific research strengths . Although noted as not a federal responsibility, presentations also cited the need to address the imbalance of social service per-capita funding in York Region. "All residents of Newmarket and Aurora have an opportunity to play a role in the federal budget process," said MP Brown. "I encourage everyone to take the time to submit any ideas and comments they might have. Their input will be seriously considered for this budget as we work together to plan the future of our country." Residents may submit their ideas and suggestions in person to 16600 Bayview Ave., Ste. 206, Newmarket, by fax to 905-953-7527 or by email to Brown.L@parl.gc.ca. Budget 2010 will be released on March 4. For more information call 905-953-7515. |
